Opponents of the $70 million privately funded plan to expand Tweed-New Haven Airport have formed a new organization to fight it, called 10,000 Hawks.

Their aim is to watch like hawks as the plan’s details, to be executed by public Tweed’s private operational managers, the Goldman Sachs-owned Avports, progress into what they fear will be a noisy polluted reality. Read Full Article here.

(anthropocenealliance.org May 31, 2021) In February 2019, the USC Environmental Health Center reported on a study by Dr. Rima Habre about short-term health impacts caused by breathing in ultrafine particulate (UFP) matter that is emitted from aircraft activity at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). “The results showed levels of the dangerous UFPs were found to be 4 to 5 times greater than background levels in downwind communities.” Why does this matter? “Ultrafine particulate matter is known to contribute to reduced lung function, and airway inflammation in individuals with asthma.” Read Full Article here.

It is wedged between New Haven Harbor where the Quinnipiac River empties, the Farm River mouth separating East Haven and Branford, and Long Island Sound. (Yale Daily News Feb 19,2021) Tweed-New Haven Airport lost commercial service last November due to record drops in demand during the pandemic. However, on Jan. 6, the airport resumed flights with American Airlines to Philadelphia.
